The Louise Perkins Foundation launched Sweet Louise in 2006 with the single minded vision of improving the quality of life for New Zealanders living with secondary breast cancer.
Every year 3,000 women in New Zealand are diagnosed with breast cancer. Of those, approximately 15% will go on to develop secondary, terminal breast cancer. At this stage, the disease is incurable with an average life expectancy of 3-5 years post diagnosis. During this time, patients face repeated cycles of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and the difficult physical, financial and emotional stresses associated with the treatments. Those closest to them – family (children), friends and caregivers – will also be dramatically impacted.
Sweet Louise’s goal is to help women to live as well as they can, for as long as they can and that starts with support to these women and their families after receiving this devastating diagnosis. Finding joy and hope in every day becomes very important and it is often the simplest gestures of kindness that can make the biggest difference to these women and their families.
Providing help and assisting to raise awareness and funds for Sweet Louise at Farro Fresh is very important to us. Cancer touches the lives of so many in New Zealand and the effect it has on family is massive. Simple day to day family functions such as cooking and family meal times, housework and shopping need to carry on but are often impossible. Sweet Louise assists with support but not just emotionally and we applaud that.
