We wait with anticipation for this time every year, for just a few weeks we are flooded with an abundance of delicious feijoas. It's a sign that autumn is here and a time to harvest as much as we can of this abundant fruit while they last. We thought it was only appropriate to share some of our favourite ways of using feijoas in the kitchen…
Spiced Feijoa Crumble Cake - A perfect way to celebrate the bounty of feijoas in autumn is with this fast-prep cake. Have all the ingredients measured out before you start, it will make it all a breeze!
Caramelised Feijoa’s - A must for any Feijoa lover and so easy! Serve with Kohn Road ice cream or Clearwater yoghurt for a scrumptious dessert made in minutes.
Freeze them for smoothies – Want to drag out the Feijoa season a little longer? Peel, and dice any left over feijoas and store in the freezer. Pop a handful in your smoothies. We love them paired with banana and yogurt, or Kiwifruit and coconut.
Preserve them – If you’re one of the lucky ones with a feijoa in your backyard, what better way to make the most of the feijoa surplus but to make jam or relish. Bottle them up for gifts or store away to use on your toast all year-round!
Feijoa ice blocks – A favourite amongst the kids this is a great use of abundant feijoa. Simply remove the skins and blend in a blender and out into ice block moulds and freeze. Pair with other tropical fruits or use feijoa’s alone.
Feijoa cordial - Now we’re taking. Once you’re done baking and preserving the feijoas, put the left-over skins to good use by making cordial. Grate or peel the skins and add to a large pot filled with water and lemon juice. Bring to the boil and add sugar. Strain cordial and once cooled, pour into sterile bottles. Another delicious home-made gift, or store in a dark place (the pantry is fine) for you and the family to enjoy year-round.
Hot tip: Ripen at room temperature then store in the refrigerator. Handle all fresh produce with care and wash before eating.
