FRESH FROM THE MARKET: BRASSICAS

FRESH FROM THE MARKET: BRASSICAS

In season this month are the brassicas – A genus of plants in the mustard family that includes broccoli, cabbage, kale, and many other bittergreens! Asian veges are also very good at this time of year and we love to sing the praises of Allan Fong of Perfect Produce. Allan’s family run business dates back to the 1940’s and his grandfather . The fertile region, 50km south of Auckland central, with its’ volcanic soil combined with Chinese commercial growing expertise that enabled early and successful vegetable crop production, has been a great success for Allan and we see it in his gorgeous baby and full sized cos lettuce and his Asian cabbages such as Pak choy and Bok choy.

Brassica and other cruciferous vegetables are considered to be very healthy; they’re high in fiber and many vitamins. We love them because they are delicious; cabbage, broccoli, and other cruciferous brassica have deliciously bitter and complex tastes going on.

We especially love them this time of year, when they are just beginning to emerge from the ground. There will be even more available later in the season, and cabbage is a winter staple of course. But when they are young and tender their flavour is slightly different and delicious in its own way.
