Farro Food Hero: House of Dumplings
Founder Vicky Ha makes a delicious range of hand-made dumplings with locally-sourced ingredients. They are moreish little parcels of goodness, easy to cook and will definitely leave you wonton’ more!
Vicky Ha was working as a larder chef when she had colleagues around after work and served up dumplings and sauces using her mum’s recipes. The food was an instant hit and her friends urged her to set up her own food business – that was all the encouragement Vicky needed.
After spending a season earning the set-up capital as a cook on a tiger prawns boat off the coast of Australia, the unstoppable Vicky was able to set up her business. Armed with her can-do attitude, chef skills and a bottomless supply of energy and enthusiasm, Vicky set about developing the range and designing her own logo.
“I even stamped our own business cards before pitching the idea to City Markets in Wellington. We got the thumbs up for their open kitchen and we haven’t looked back.” Vicky comes from a family of foodies, moving from Hong Kong to Dunedin when she was a teenager.
“In Hong Kong, food is very important and I was lucky enough to grow up in a house full of delicious food. At House of Dumplings, we hand-make every single dumpling, get our ingredients from local producers and try our best to minimise the impact on our planet.
“We don’t use MSG, artificial colouring or flavourings. And it’s very important to me that our food is sourced locally – the poultry is free-range Bostock chicken from Hawke’s Bay, the Heritage Pork comes from Wairarapa, beef from Taupo, and most of the vegetables from local markets in Levin.
Cultivating strong relationships with her food producers has remained very important to Vicky.
“I love finding out all the little details about the provenance of our food, how they set up their business and what keeps them going.
“When I meet our producers face-to-face, I like to find out the story behind the food. For example, too much rain might affect the cabbage quality or too little sunshine will mean the herbs don’t grow as well.”
The House of Dumplings frozen range includes Cheerful Chicken, Prancing Pork, Vegan Treats (Japanese Six Mushroom and Spinach, Tofu & Bok Choy) and Full House (combination box).
