New to store: OLelei AL-ICE ice cream
The idea for OLelei came about in 2015, when a group of students from Henderson College were given a task to create a business as part of the Young Enterprise programme. Two members of the group were dairy-free, and they recognised there was a growing market for dairy alternatives. The set upon the idea to create a completely natural almond milk made in West Auckland – OLelei’s first product AL-MILK was born. OLelei’s Samoan translation pays respect not only to the goodness of natural almond milk, but also homage to the team’s Pasifika heritage.
The company is now run by three of the foundation group and with three products under their belt, they are determined to make their small business work. “We do not let our age or limitations get in the way! We are determined, hard-working, resilient and never give up. We have large goals in mind for the company and cannot wait to see where this journey will take us,” Olelei CEO Matt Billington says.
Farro is now selling OLelei’s latest addition – AL-ICE, almond milk ice cream. Every batch of AL-ICE is made from scratch. The team makes the almond milk, which is 100 percent dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan, with no added colours or preservatives. It’s crafted into ice cream in partnership with The Gelato Workshop in Birkenhead.
While plain AL-ICE is the first on the shelves, the OLelei team also has three new flavours in development, including chocolate flavour using KoKo direct from the islands. Watch this space.
